Paul Allen and I founded Microsoft together, and my love for software is as strong as ever.
However, even though software has come a long way in the last few decades, in many ways it is still pretty clunky.
To perform any task on your computer, you need to specify the application you want to use. While you can use Microsoft Word or Google Docs to compose a business proposal, these tools can’t help you send an email, share a selfie, analyze data, schedule a party, or buy movie tickets. Even the best websites have only a partial understanding of your work, personal life, interests, and relationships, and are limited in their ability to use that information to your advantage. Currently, this kind of work can usually only be done by a human, such as your close friend or personal assistant.
But in the next five years, all that will change. You no longer need to switch between different apps for different tasks. You simply tell your device what you want to do in ordinary language, and because it has a deep understanding of your life, the software will be able to personalize its response based on the amount of information you’re willing to share.
In the near future, anyone with an Internet connection will be able to have a personal assistant powered by advanced artificial intelligence.

Everyone’s personal assistant
Critics point out that software companies have offered similar services before, but users have not fully embraced them. (People still joke about Clippy, the digital assistant we included in Microsoft Office and then dropped.) So why do people use Agent?
The answer is that agents will be vastly improved. You will be able to have a more nuanced conversation with them. They will become more personalized and not just limited to relatively simple tasks such as writing letters. The Agent is more intelligent. They offer suggestions, not just when you ask for them. Imagine you want to plan a trip. A travel robot may only be able to help you find a hotel that fits your budget. The Agent, on the other hand, knows which season you will be traveling in and makes destination suggestions based on its knowledge of whether you always try new destinations or like to visit the same places repeatedly. When asked, it will also recommend activities based on your interests and adventurous tendencies, and make reservations for you at your favorite restaurants. If you want this kind of deeply personalized planning today, you need to pay a travel agent and take the time to tell them about your needs.
The most exciting impact of AI agents is that they will make services that are too expensive for most people today accessible. They will have a huge impact in four areas: healthcare, education, productivity, and entertainment and shopping.
Health care
In healthcare today, artificial intelligence is mainly used to assist with administrative tasks. For example, systems such as Abridge, Nuance DAX, and Nabla Copilot can record audio during a doctor’s diagnosis and organize it into notes for the doctor to review.
The real change will come when agents are able to assist patients with initial triage, provide advice on dealing with health issues, and determine whether medical care is needed. These agents will also help healthcare workers make more informed decisions and improve their productivity (for example, apps like Glass Health can analyze patient summaries and suggest possible diagnoses for doctors). The adoption of these clinical agents will be slower than other types because accuracy is a matter of life and death. People need to be convinced that while these healthy agents are imperfect and fallible, they are generally beneficial. Of course, humans make mistakes, too, and lack of access to medical care is a problem.
Mental health care is another service area where agents will reach almost everyone. These days, weekly therapy sessions seem like a luxury. There are still many unmet needs and many people who could benefit from treatment do not have access to it. For example, a RAND study found that half of veterans in the US who need mental health care do not receive it.
AI agents trained in mental health will make treatment more affordable and also more accessible to people. Wysa and Youper are two early examples of chatbots in this space. But the role of agents goes deeper. If you are willing to share adequate information with a mental health Agent, it will be able to understand your life history and relationships, it will be available when you need it, and it will never feel impatient. With your permission, it can even monitor your physiological responses during therapy via the smartwatch – such as your heart racing when you talk about a problem with your boss – and suggest when you should seek the help of a human psychotherapist. Education
For decades, I’ve been excited about how software can simplify teachers’ jobs and help students learn. It will not replace teachers, but will complement their work – personalizing work for students, freeing teachers from paperwork and other tasks, and enabling them to spend more time on the most important parts of their jobs. These changes are finally starting to happen in a dramatic way.
The current advanced technology is Khanmigo, a text-based robot developed by Khan Academy. It can help students in math, science, and the humanities – for example, explaining quadratic equations and creating math problems for practice. It can also help teachers with curriculum planning and other tasks. I’ve long been a supporter of Sal Khan’s work and recently invited him to discuss education and AI on my podcast.
But text-based bots are just the first step – agents will open up many more learning opportunities.
For example, few families can afford one-on-one after-school tutoring as a supplement to classroom instruction. If agents can effectively mimic the characteristics of tutors, they will provide complementary teaching for all who need it. If a tutoring Agent knows that a child likes Minecraft and Taylor Swift, it will use Minecraft to teach volume and area calculations and teach techniques about narrative and rhyming structures through Taylor’s lyrics. Compared to today’s text-based tutoring, the experience will be richer – combining graphics and sound, for example – and more personalized.
Productivity
In this area, competition is already fierce. Microsoft is integrating its Copilot capabilities into services like Word, Excel, Outlook, and more. Google is doing something similar with Assistant, Bard, and its productivity tools. These assistants can do a number of tasks, such as turning text documents into slideshows, answering spreadsheet-related questions in natural language, and summarizing email discussions while reflecting everyone’s point of view.
The Agent will be more powerful. Having an Agent is like having someone who specializes in assisting you with various tasks and completing them independently when you need them. For example, if you have a business idea, an Agent can help you write a business plan, create a presentation, and even generate an image of what you think the product might look like. Companies can provide Agent services for employees, allowing agents to directly participate in each meeting and answer questions.
Whether you work in an office or not, your Agent will be able to help you just like a personal assistant does today. If your friend has recently undergone surgery, your Agent will offer to send flowers and can help you complete your order. If you want to reunite with your college roommate, it will work with their Agent to arrange a meeting time and remind you before you arrive that their older child has just started school at a local college.
Entertainment and shopping
Ai can already help you pick new TVS and recommend movies, books, shows, and podcasts. Similarly, a company I invested in recently launched Pix, which allows you to ask questions (e.g., “Which Robert Redford movies would I like?”). OpenAI’s GPTs launch this week shows a preview of a future where non-developers can easily create and share their own assistants.
Agents will influence how we use software and how software is written. They will replace search sites because they will be more efficient at finding and summarizing information for you. They will replace many e-commerce sites because they can find the best price for you and are not limited to a few suppliers. They will replace word processors, spreadsheets, and other productivity applications. Today’s separate businesses – search advertising, social networks with ads, shopping, productivity software – will merge into a single business.
I don’t think there will be any single company dominating the Agent business – there will be many different AI engines to choose from. Today, agents are embedded in other software, such as word processors and spreadsheets, but eventually they will operate independently. While some agents will be free to use (and supported by advertising), I think you’ll need to pay for most of them, which means companies will have an incentive to have agents represent your interests rather than those of advertisers. The number of companies starting to work on AI this year suggests that there will be exceptionally fierce competition, which will make Agent prices very affordable.
But before the advanced Agent I’ve described becomes a reality, we need to face many questions about the technology and how it can be used. I’ve written before about the issues raised by AI, so in this article I’ll focus on agents. CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
Technical challenges
No one has yet figured out what the Agent’s data structure should be. To create personal agents, we need a new type of database that can precisely capture the nuances of your interests and relationships and extract that information quickly while preserving privacy. We are already starting to see some new ways of storing information, such as vector databases, which may be better suited to storing data generated by machine learning models.
There is also the mystery of how many agents people will interact with. Will your personal Agent be separate from your psychotherapy Agent and math tutoring Agent? If so, under what circumstances do you want them to cooperate, and when should they remain separate?
How will you interact with your Agent? The company is exploring options including apps, glasses, pendants, pins, and even holograms. These are all possible ways, but I think the first big breakthrough in human-agent interaction will be headsets. If your Agent needs to contact you, it will speak to you through the headset or display a message on your phone. (” Your flight has been delayed. Do you want to wait, or do you want me to rebook you?” If you want, it can also monitor the sounds coming into your ear and enhance the listening experience by eliminating background noise, enhancing hard-to-hear speech, or making heavily accented words easier to understand. There are other challenges. There is currently no standard protocol that allows agents to communicate with each other. The cost of the Agent needs to be reduced to make it affordable for everyone. The process of activating the Agent to get the right answer needs to be simpler. We need to prevent hallucinations in areas such as health, where accuracy is critical, while ensuring that agents do not cause harm to humans through bias. We don’t want agents to do things they shouldn’t do. (Although I worry less about malicious agents than I do about human criminals using agents for malicious activities.)
Privacy and other major issues
As these technologies converge, online privacy and security concerns will become even more pressing than they are now. You will want to be able to decide what information the Agent can access to make sure that your data is only shared by the people and companies you choose.
But who owns the data you share with the Agent, and how do you make sure it’s being used appropriately? No one wants to start receiving relevant ads because of what they told the psychotherapy Agent. Can law enforcement use your Agent as evidence against you? When does your Agent refuse to do something that might be harmful to you or others? Who determines the values embedded in the Agent?
There is also the question of how much information the Agent should share. Let’s say you want to meet a friend: if your Agent communicates with their Agent, you don’t want it to say, “Oh, she’s meeting other friends on Tuesday and doesn’t intend for you to attend.” If your Agent is writing work emails for you, it needs to know not to use your personal information or proprietary data from previous jobs.
Many of these issues are already the focus of the tech industry and lawmakers. I recently attended an AI forum organized by Sen. Chuck Schumer, attended by other tech leaders, and attended by many U.S. senators. We shared thoughts on these and other issues and discussed the need for lawmakers to adopt strong legislation. But other issues will not be decided by companies and governments. For example, agents may change the way we interact with friends and family. Today, you can show that you care about them by remembering details in their lives – such as their birthdays. But does it still make sense to them when they know that it was most likely your Agent who alerted you to the event and was responsible for delivering the flowers?
In the distant future, agents may even force humanity to confront profound questions about “purpose.” Imagine agents becoming so good that everyone can enjoy a high quality of life with little to no work. What will people do with their time in such a future? Will anyone want to be educated when the Agent has all the answers? Can a safe and prosperous society be maintained when most people have plenty of free time? CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
But we are far from that point.
Meanwhile, the Agent is quietly arriving.
In the coming years, they will revolutionize the way we live, both online and offline.
