When Chen Xinying led Ping An Technology Group, in order to drive major innovation investments that didn’t pay off in the short term, she had to convince numerous internal leaders that she and her team had no short cuts but to grind ahead. She is grateful to Ping An Chairman Ma Mingzhe for his full support of the innovative business and her work. And that persistence has yielded remarkable results: Ping An had just 3,000 developers and seven patents when Chen joined; today it has 30,000 developers and 46,000 patents.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
The following is an edited transcript of the interview:
What was your career highlight moment?
Chen Xinying, Executive Director, Co-CEO and Deputy General Manager of Ping An Group: About five years ago, I was given the opportunity to develop technology financial services and medical and health services within Ping An. About two or three years ago, I started taking on the insurance portfolio business, combining insurance, health care and old-age services. We are not just providing an insurance policy, but more importantly, we are providing services to our customers so that they and their parents can live healthier lives in retirement. We also launched a new product last year about home care, which provides 24/7 service for customers and their parents.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
It’s really meaningful and a great addition to our business. Because it not only embodies safe financial services and technological services, but also gives meaning to people’s lives. I think it’s a very different industry. I’m glad we made it.
Can you tell us about your challenging career moments?
Chen Xinying, Executive Director, Co-CEO and Deputy General Manager of Ping An Group: In the two or three years since I first joined Ping An, the company has been carrying out scientific and technological innovation. At the time we had 3,000 developers; now we have 30,000; At the time we had only seven patents; now we have 46,000. We are number one in fintech, healthcare and artificial intelligence.
Of course, this process is not easy, because there are many investments to be made and many things to explore at the beginning, but the results are not immediate. A lot of people are questioning, and we’re not very profitable as a division, but we’re focused on the value we can create in the future. I remember there were regular meetings every Saturday and I had to co-ordinate those meetings and sometimes I was attacked and it was really painful.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
In fact, most people, most executives at that time, just had innovation as a small agenda, because no one knew how it would turn out. And I bet my whole career on it. Looking back now, I’m glad we were able to grit our teeth and stick it out.
What personality traits have helped you overcome these obstacles and have stayed with you throughout your career?
Chen Xinying, Executive Director, co-CEO and Deputy General manager of Ping An Group: My character is actually throughout. When I was promoted to global managing partner at McKinsey, my colleagues gave me two gifts: a lightsaber and a cute teddy bear. I’m known to be very demanding, very analytical, and I think deeply about every decision because I want to make sure that all aspects are balanced when I make a decision. It’s hard for people to get me to agree on something, but when I do, I do my best.
On the other hand, I think I’m approachable because I care about my subordinates from the bottom of my heart and offer a lot of personal advice and support to all team members. I care about their professional and personal development. When I see someone who wants to excel, I actively create positions to help them grow, which makes me a human leader. What advice do you have for women who are mid-career?
Ping An Group Executive Director, co-CEO, Executive Deputy General Manager Chen Xinying: Find a good mentor. Looking back at my own mid-career, I was faced with a lot of choices and had to balance and make choices, sometimes purely in my career and sometimes between my career and my personal affairs. In these aspects, the opinions of Bole and the mentor are very important. Great managers and mentors trust you to give you the right advice, not just from the company or from themselves, but from you. They will also give you opportunities to improve, learn and explore.
Ma Mingzhe, Ping An’s chairman, gave me a chance, just as I would later give my subordinates a chance. I was 36 years old and a Singaporean of Chinese descent. He put me in charge of the technology business, then the health care business, insurance business, and created a lot of opportunities for me.
In retrospect, there were times when the choices my mentors asked me to make were not the ones I wanted to make in the first place. But they showed their trust in me by telling me that this choice was better for me, and it turned out to be true.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
Chen Xinying believes that female managers can do this level, has proved their ability. The key is to have the support of your family and balance your energy so that you can continue to be the best you can be. “The higher you go, the less weight you have [as an individual]. Your impact is no longer limited to what you do, but what you can influence and inspire others to do.”
The views expressed are solely those of the respondent.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
