Profile
Liu Chiping, male, Han nationality, Hong Kong, China, born in Beijing in 1973. Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University. He is currently President of Tencent.
Character experience
Early experience
Born in Beijing in 1973 to children from Hong Kong, Lau worked hard as a schoolboy. By the age of 25, he had earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan and two master’s degrees from Stanford and Northwestern Universities.
After graduating in 1998, Mr Lau worked as a management consultant at McKinsey and then became chief operating officer of the telecoms, media and technology group at Goldman Sachs Investment Banking in Asia. It was during his time at Goldman that Mr Lau learned his lesson in a complex restructuring project. It took Goldman Sachs two years to restructure Guangdong Yuehai Group, a well-known investment company in China, involving more than 100 creditor banks and 400 companies.
Liu works until two or three in the morning every day. It feels like four years to do a two-year annual project. However, after the final completion of the project, Liu also had a comprehensive understanding of almost all the processes of management, operation and execution of the enterprise. “After the completion of this project, basically any project will be easier.” He believes that a good company is 20 percent strategic success and 80 percent execution. So he wanted to go from being a third party who gave strategic advice to being a strategy executor.
Join Tencent
In 2004, the opportunity finally came. Ma was impressed by Lau’s talent as Goldman Sachs worked on Tencent’s IPO, and Lau felt the Chinese company’s brilliance as he worked on its IPO. Mr Lau was invited to become Tencent’s chief strategic investment officer, responsible for strategy, investments, mergers and acquisitions and investor relations.
Before Martin Lau joined Tencent, it seldom used external investment means, instead, it invested in internal R&D departments and other departments. Whatever was popular, it did what it wanted, which also enabled Tencent to develop rapidly in game, portal, Internet value-added services and other fields, thus achieving the golden five years of Tencent.
This organic growth also makes Ma Huatong concerned:
although Tencent is still China’s largest Internet company by user size, products and profitability, its growth has slowed significantly: NetEase is no match for games, Baidu is no match for advertising, and SP is the last supper. Tencent next how to continue to maintain high growth becomes the question.
That’s when Ma set his sights on Martin Lau, who was at Goldman Sachs and had previously worked at McKinsey & Company. Mr Lau has more than a decade of experience in initial public offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and management consulting, and the two struck up a friendship while Goldman was working on Tencent’s listing. In the end, Lau was willing to give up his annual salary for the “findfindfood” of Ma Huateng, and gradually took over from Ma Huateng, taking overall charge of the company’s business management.
In 2005, he joined Tencent as its Chief Strategic Investment Officer, responsible for corporate strategy, investments, mergers and acquisitions, and investor relations.
Mr. Ma Huateng, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Tencent, was appointed President of Tencent in February 2006 and assisted in the daily management and operation of the company.
He was appointed Executive Director in March 2007.
He has been a non-executive director of Kingsoft since July 28 2011.
On May 24, 2012, Tencent announced that it would invest 1 billion US dollars into the independent Tencent E-commerce Holding Company. Meanwhile, it also announced that Martin Lau, President of Tencent Group, would become the chairman of Tencent E-commerce Holding Company.
On December 23, 2021, Jingdong Group announced that Martin Lau had resigned from the Company’s board of directors with immediate effect.
In April 2022, Martin Lau, president of Tencent, resigned as Didi’s director.
Martin Lau resigned as director of Tencent Music on May 27, 2022.
Martin Lau resigned as a non-executive director of Kingsoft and as a member of the nominating Committee in August 2022.
On November 16, 2022, Meituan announced that Martin Lau had resigned as a non-executive director of Meituan due to a proposed change in Tencent’s shareholding in the company.
On 22 March 2023, Tencent announced on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange that Mr. Martin Lau, Executive Director of Tencent Holdings, would retire from the company on the occasion of the 2023 Annual General Meeting and would not retire for reappointment. Mr. Lau will cease to be a director after the 2023 Annual General Meeting. But will continue to serve as President of the Company and Chairman of the Investment Committee.
Quotations
“A good company is 20 percent strategic success and 80 percent execution.”
“We’re not fighting for a piece of pie, but finding out how to have a bigger piece of pie.”
“As a professional manager, I think about how to run the company well. The final results are what I value, but other things like fame are not what I care about.”
“We are clearly aware that our Internet industry is still at a well-off stage. We have just taken the first step of a long march and there is still a long way to go. During this long journey, I would like to share three values with you. The first is user value, the second is partnership value, and the third is social value.”
