For Wang Ying, Tencent’s three years at the company, the company’s rapid development in the United States and the outbreak of remote work brought unprecedented challenges for her.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
Wang joined Tencent in 2019, and since then her work and personal life have moved into the high-speed lane. As Tencent gears up to recruit talent globally, she needs to constantly rethink and adjust her work strategy, from recruiting to improving employee productivity more effectively, to steadily advance through the difficulties of remote working.
We spoke to Wang Ying on the occasion of International Women’s Day 2022. She is currently the Director of Human Resources and Operations Group at Tencent Americas and the Head of Human Resources at Tencent Entertainment International Games. In the interview, she reflected on her journey at Tencent and shared advice for those working in the tech industry.

Q: Please briefly describe your career and why did you choose to work at Tencent?
A: Before joining Tencent, I worked at Google China, Singapore and the United States for nearly 12 years in various positions, which was very important for my career development. Three years ago, Tencent was preparing to build its overseas HR team, and I decided to join Tencent. After joining the company, I returned to the United States to lead the company’s local HR and operations teams, and I recently became responsible for the human resources work of Tencent Interactive Games.
I don’t really like to limit myself to one industry or field. Instead of simply following instructions, we should take the initiative to conceive and initiate new projects. In Tencent, you have the opportunity to build a better management system for the company.
Q: What do you think of Tencent’s culture?
A: I really like the culture at Tencent, where we focus on doing things well, work is results-oriented, and people are humble. It is very important to align our values with the company, and I like the way we work, where everyone in the company can give feedback and suggestions for improvement.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
Q: You are one of the founders of Tencent’s US DEI Council. How did this project come about?
A: We want to create a working environment where every employee can thrive. The idea grew out of my experience working in different countries. My goal is to create a diverse, equal and inclusive workplace where everyone can work comfortably.
My previous work experience includes training leaders and management on DEI, coaching them on how to manage and build diverse teams, and dealing with bias.
As our products and services grow steadily overseas, we recognize the importance of equality and inclusion. We take this issue very seriously and regularly discuss it in our internal meetings in the United States to ensure significant progress in this part of our work.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
Q: Did your experience at Tencent change your work model and stress management?
A: My experience at Tencent has enabled me to take a long-term strategic view and think holistically about how to create a clearer goal for my team. Here, I need to manage employees with different functions and talents. This has helped me improve my understanding of different roles and become a better leader.
I’ve also become better at handling stress. Work has taught me that the only constant is change itself. I hope to keep things simple and only do the right things, which helps me to relieve stress.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
Q: What are your goals for work and life this year?
A: We will continue to enhance the company’s international presence and bring diverse cultures into the team. We have recently recruited people from Turkey, Brazil and Mexico to work with more people from different cultures.
Personally, I would love to be able to do more outdoor activities with my family. I like extreme sports, rock climbing and diving, and I would love to try skydiving. You can take risks at work and at home.CXO UNION-CXO联盟(cxounion.cn)
